The Cardinals endured a tough opening series against the Brewers, winning just one of their first four games of the season to enter the week with a 1-3 overall record. Meanwhile, the Pirates split their first two games of the year against the Cincinnati Reds and had another game postponed due to inclement weather. Can St. Louis right the ship against the Pirates at PNC Park on Monday?

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates will kick off their MLB series on Monday.

The Cards are setting up with veteran Adam Wainwright in the start Monday. Wainwright had some major elbow issues last season, and only started eight games for the Cardinals. He went 2-4 with a 4.46 ERA over 40.1 innings in those appearances.

St. Louis will turn to veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright on Monday night. The 37-year-old hurler is fresh off of an injury-riddled season in which he posted a 2-4 record and a 4.46 ERA in eight starts. One of those eight starts came against the Pirates, who lit him up for four earned runs on five hits in five innings of work. Over the past three seasons, Wainwright is 2-1 with a 4.56 ERA in nine games (eight starts) versus the Pirates and he’s posted a 7.31 ERA in four games (three starts) at PNC Park during that span.

According to Baseball Savant, he has limited Pittsburgh’s current lineup to a .261 batting average in 124 plate appearances. Pirates’ hitters own an expected batting average of .237 and an expected weighted on-base percentage of .312 versus Wainwright heading into Monday’s matchup.

Pittsburgh is scheduled to hand the ball to former ace Chris Archer, who has become the latest reclamation project to come over to the Pirates’ organization. Archer is coming off of a disappointing season in which he went 6-8 with a 4.31 ERA in 27 starts. After going 31-29 in his first three full MLB seasons, Archer is just 25-39 with a 4.12 ERA over the past three years and his strikeout rate dropped off by nearly a strikeout-and-a-half last season, despite still sitting over a strikeout per inning.

His problem is that he only throws a fastball and slider and tries to mix in a change with little to no success. Since he’s basically just a two-pitch starter, he runs into a couple of issues. Since hitters immediately see his entire arsenal, Archer struggles the second and third time through the batting order, when his ERA jumps from 3.65 to 4.95 and 4.50, respectively. Then, once he falls behind in the count, he comes back with his fastball in the zone and gets crushed. When Archer got ahead in the count 0-1, he had a 1.70 FIP for the at-bat. If he fell behind 1-0, that number jumped to 5.96 FIP. That led to hitters sporting a healthy .338 BABIP off of him last season.

The Cardinals have dominated this series as of late, especially with Wainwright on the mound. St. Louis is 6-1 in Wainwright’s last seven starts versus the Pirates and four of their last five meetings against Pittsburgh overall. However,  Wainwright has struggled at PNC Park over the past three seasons and he’s a major question mark heading into this game. At least you know what you’re going to get with Archer and the Pirates have a balanced lineup that can scrape runs across the plate. Take the Pirates to come out on top at home in this NL Central battle on Monday.
